Bath 12 Walcountian Blues 4
By Nik Roberts
Big day for Bath, first home game of the season and brand new shirts as well, for the time being Bath actually look like a team again.Walcountian Blues came to Bath thinking the home side had a 'one dimensional attack, via veteran attack man Nik Roberts', so the plan was, stick a hulking great Australian on the poor old feeble attack man and the rest would look after itself, nice idea, but unfortunately for the Blues misinformed Bath are capable of scoring from several areas and this was to be the case, with the midfield bagging 7 of the 12 goals. The Blues, to give them their due missed Amit Bizwas, who tends to do well against Baths main face man Ken Murray, and the ground ball was dominated by the home team as a result. Matt Wellings coming up with 15 ground balls overall. The first quarter should have seen Bath put on a big lead as they out shot the Blues 11 to 2, but the post and goalkeeper seemed to get in the way a little too often, it took most of the quarter for the breakthrough to come from a Matt Fisher goal assisted by Simon Griffiths.Si Griffiths became more and more influential, driving from behind goal and dumping the ball to the extra man created by a premature slide in the Blue defence, Bath Dominated proceedings, scoring 5 goals to only 1 in reply, Griffith getting 2 of his 4 assists in this period. In the second half the visitors re assessed their tactics, concentrating more on the threat from the midfield up front, leaving the crease slightly open, and Nik Roberts duly obliged popping up in the crease for a Matt Fisher assist. 3 more goals and a quarter shut out for keeper Dan Weil put Bahh firmly in the driving seat. The big danger was going to be complacency, and the Bath team started the last quarter with two quick goals, and then duly fell asleep, Weir went wandering, Sam White careering (flattening some poor midfield guy in the process) and for a brief minute or two the Blues were let back into the game, and they won the last 3 to 2.All in all this was a good display from the Bath squad, who still have a few players in the wings to come back. Well done the Blues No 37 for 4 goals on the day. Quotes of the day:'You guys could have warned me' Ken Murray after being sacked from behind, despite half the team yelling at him that it was coming.'G'day Mate' 'Yeeeaaa G'day' 'Ey' 'wot' 'yea right' 'ey' 'jeese' 'ey' 'wot' 'right' - Conversation between Matt Fisher, Mark Lovett and Travis Taylor (2 Aussies and a Canuck).
